A guide to ensure the safety of students during online learning sessions

Now that the “new normal” is going to still linger for a little while longer, it’s still hard to believe that almost a year ago that schools and learning had taken a hard hit forcing children to take online classes from home instead of going to school.

For the major part of 2020,  we have seen an unprecedented amount in adoption of online learning platforms and services by schools and eduplus has also been delivering quality education right to the students’ homes virtually to over 20,000 students across the globe.

With all of this the privacy and safety of these students should also not be taken lightly and to help you out, we’ve put together a few pointers on how students can have a safe space on the internet as they navigate and spend the major part of their day in front of a computer screen.

Secure internet connection: Ensure you’re always connected to the Internet via a secure internet connection. Avoid trying to connect to a public Wi-Fi as they are the most prone to cyber attacks. Always protect your internet connection with a strong username and password.

  • Parental control settings: During the online class session, your child might have to browse the Internet for relevant content. Ensure that suspicious and malicious websites are blocked or flagged including content that might not be child friendly.
  • Inclusion of parents/guardians: Include and get acquainted as much as possible with the classes your child is taking online by keeping a regular check on the content being taught, being in contact with your child’s tutors or teachers and also try helping your children if they’re facing any kind of issues.
  • Webcam monitoring: The online classes rely heavily on the webcams in the laptops or tablets. Block and flag any kind of unsolicited websites that might require the access for your webcam unless it is under your authority or discretion.
  • Education on cyber threats: Ensure that your children are properly educated early on about the online world and the threats they should always stay away from. Make sure that they are fully aware of malware such as viruses, malicious websites and also not to open attachments from unknown emails, not share the passwords with anyone and also not to click on links that look suspicious.

We hope these tips will help you and the students use the internet in a safe manner and also get the most out of the plethora of information and knowledge available. With eduplus, rest assured that privacy is of paramount importance and also helps feel like the kids are actually in school though they’re at home.
